Session 503

We had to do a video pitch of two of our refined stories this week. That's kinda scary, but as animators, we obviously has to pitch ideas to the director and supervisors all the time, so the only thing to do, is roll up one's sleeves and jump straight into it. :)

In terms of storytelling, I'm trying to get my head around The Hero's Journey-concept by Joseph Campbell and I've ordered his book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces". I also found a really cool documentary with Campbell on YouTube.

Also, AWNs Oscar Showcase gives us a sneak peak at Pixar's next short, "Lifted". (Thanks, Phil) Looks awesome! It's only available for a limited time, so hurry up and take a look.

Session 502

This week, we had to come up with five story ideas to pitch to our mentor. The lectures and some really great tips from Pepe in the Q&A helps a lot, but it's still hard to come up with something nice and doable and something that we like so much that it will be okay spending, at least, the next 6 months working on it.

My mentor, Pepe Valencia, is the co-author of the book "Inspired 3D Short Film Production", so I feel that I'm in really good hands when going thru the pre-production phase this term.

Animation Mentor had its first graduation ceremony in San Francisco last weekend. Here's a link to a news story (video): ABC News Graduation for Internet Student Animators. Cooooool! In 5 1/2 months, it's our turn :)

Session 501

Yay, back in business. Class 5 and ready to start pre-production for our short-film. This term is all about finding ideas, develop them, storyboard and eventually end up with a rock solid layout by the end of the term.

My new class seems cool. Some familiar faces, but mostly people that I don't know, which is cool. We had an introduction q&a on Friday and it was nice to meet everybody. For my part, I had some sound trouble that caused lots of echo. Kinda embarrassing, but hopefully I can get support to look at it and sort it out so it won't happen again :)

My mentor this term is Pepe Valencia. He seems like a really really nice guy and here's his impressive biography:

Pepe Valencia joined Sony Pictures Imageworks in 1996 where he served as Animation Supervisor on The Aviator, Peter Pan, and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. Other credits include Open Season, Early Bloomer, Stuart Little 2 (winner of the VES Award for Best Character Animation in an Animated Film), Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone , the Academy Award(R) nominated Hollow Man, the Academy Award nominated Stuart Little , Godzilla and the Academy Award nominated Starship Troopers. Recently, he did camera direction with Robert Zemeckis on The Polar Express and Gil Kenan on Monster House. He is currently working on the first Sony Pictures Animation feature film Surf's Up.
Before joining Imageworks, Pepe worked at Cinesite as a Technical Director on Space Jam and at a number of smaller production houses. His independent work has been shown at SIGGRAPH 90, Imagina 92, Art Futura 92, and Cannes 94. He served as a member of the Animated Short Films jury for the 2001 ASIFA Annie Awards and has written articles for Cinevideo 20 and Campana.

I'm really excited about this term and I'm looking forward to do a complete project all the way from idea to complete short film.

Counting down to January 8th

Happy New Year!!!

2007 is going to be a fantastic year! Exactly one year ago today, on January 4th 2006, I posted my
first blogger post. Now, after three weeks of holiday, I feel kinda the same excitement that I had back then, maybe more, because now I know more about how awesome its going to be. Class 5 is starting January 8th and I can't wait to get started!
